Overview
Talc is a naturally occurring mineral composed of magnesium, silicon, oxygen, and hydrogen. It can also be referenced as hydrated magnesium silicate. Talc has been safely used for centuries (dating back to ancient Egypt) worldwide in products such as face, body and baby powders, cosmetics, deodorant, toothpaste, chewing gum, and much more.
Nearly 40 years of scientific research by government and non-governmental agencies have concluded that talc is safe, yet numerous lawsuits have been filed by individuals with various cancers who feel that talc was a leading factor in their illness. Facing mounting pressure and the threat of years of future mass litigation, Johnson & Johnson pulled its talc-based products from U.S. and Canadian markets in 2020.
The Center’s Focus
The Center for Truth in Science seeks to determine if there is conclusive, consistent scientific evidence that demonstrates a link between the use of talc and talcum powder-based products and the development of cancer or other chronic illnesses.
The Center also seeks to examine the potential economic impact of government-imposed limits or bans on the use of talc and talcum powder-based products.
